My mom used to always tell me, and still does on occasion that I'm her luckiest child. I would win every contest or drawing that I entered when I was younger. There was one time in 3rd grade that my teacher announced the winners for the best design for something and I wasn't on the list. I was so distraught. My mom was helping in class that day. I was almost in tears cause I had come to expect to win every contest. After complaining to my mom about it, my teacher said, "Oh, I almost forgot! There's one more winner...Charlotte Mecham!". My spirits were lifted and everything was right again in the world. Sometimes, I'd be offended that my mom would say I was her luckiest child, cause in my own opinion, I thought it was all skill. Since I graduated from high school, I've started to recognize that my luck was just that, luck. Not skill. Well, maybe a little of both, but definitely more luck than skill.
Well, the point of all that is that I lucked out again. I went to visit my friend, Stephanie, this afternoon. As I was making my way out of her neighborhood, I came to a T where I had a stop sign. I did my usual rolling stop. I quickly glanced to my right...no cars. I glanced to my left as I was rolling into the intersection and there was a car there. I did a little apologetic wave when I realized it was not an "ALL-WAY" stop. Then to my horror, I noticed that there was a set of red and blue lights on top of the car. Ahhh! A cop!!! My heart fell into my stomach. It wasn't my best stop, I'll admit. The cop angrily waved at me to pull over...so I did. As he approached my car, I rolled down the window and apologized, and admitted it wasn't a very good stop. I think my confession and apology disarmed him a little. "You didn't stop at all!!!", he said. "Yes, I did...well, good enough anyway" I unrepentingly said to myself. Then it dawned on me as he asked for my driver's license, that I've lived in TX for a year and STILL don't have a TX driver's license. The situation just went from bad to worse. Matt was gonna be ticked if we got a big fine. I calmly and unhesitantly forked over my UT driver's license, ready to face the consequences of my actions. He looked at it, asked where I lived. I told him. He asked what I was doing in the neighborhood. I told him. Then he said, "You gotta watch those stops. Have a good day". "I sure will", I thought. Whew!!! Off the hook. Lucky me!
man. at least you didn't get pulled over for drunk driving and littering. i would kindly like to remind you of that $200 ticket you got in VA. that is all. still, glad you got away this time!
ReplyDeleteJules, I never said I was lucky ALL the time...just more than my siblings. That 22 mph over ticket in VA never did show up on my record. That's worth $200 to me :)
