So the unthinkable happened. There's a sister missionary serving in our ward right now who was a hairstylist in her previous life. I really need my haircut so she was going to do it for me yesterday. She asked me to have my hair dry and straight cause she thinks dry-cuts turn out a lot better. So, I was straightening my hair, making sure that the flat iron was not within little buddy's reach. I was nearly done and stepped into the bedroom to grab my brush and turned around to discover that Lincoln had managed to grab the cord and consequently the flat iron. He was holding onto the hot plates firmly, scalding his hands, shrieking in pain and not letting go. He was literally one step away from me. I just feel awful. At first I couldn't tell where he got burned or which hand got it or if both did, so I put both his hands in cool water as he bawled his eyes out. I felt like bawling my eyes out. Not too long after, a big blister which has doubled the size of his left thumb appeared. I didn't have any burn cream so we took him to the doctor to get some. Trying to keep a bandage on the kid is a real challenge.
The Korean lady at Matt's office who got the appointment for us with the doctor told Matt to tell me that I need to watch the baby every second. Really? I didn't know that... thanks for the tip! Anyone else have any other helpful parenting advice for the worst mom ever?
That's so sad!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a mom, so I can't share my own accidents, but one time, my niece grated her finger practically off while my sister was cooking dinner. I don't think you are a bad mom at all. It could have happened to anyone!
Oh sad! You aren't a bad mom, accidents just happen. I'm sure with 2 little boys there will be many more visits to the doctor's as they try to fly off from table tops, karate chop each other too hard or knock out each other's teeth with bats (all of which happened to my older brother's) and I doubt any of them will be your fault. Boys will be boys and kids will be kids. I hope his blister heals quickly!
ReplyDeleteOhh, if I get to give unreasonable advice, then:
ReplyDeleteIf you love your kids enough, and have a strong enough testimony, they will never disobey you, do anything imperfect, and nothing bad will ever happen anywhere near them.
That you are just like the rest of us...and that experiences like that (as horrible and tough as they are) help us to be aware of what our children are really capable of doing. The good news is that I bet you he won't EVER grab it again...Poor little guy! Here is something else to make you feel better...the other day I was chatting away with some new members in the ward at the pine-wood derby... One minute Ike was running around the gym and the next he had managed to get OUT of the church and was bawling at the door to get back in. Sad thing is that I am not sure how long he was out there. So I will be the worst mom ever with you, ok? Give him kisses from us!
ReplyDeleteYeah my om dropped a curling iron on my niece... not once... but TWICE!! and both times it left massive blisters and soars on her hands and feet. you are not a bad mom... you have just joined the club. I'm so sorry that happened! poor little guy :(
ReplyDelete..Feel pain for both of YOU!! know Mom's can really feel the guilt. be blessed it wasn't worse and that you were right there to comfort Lincoln...and try and relieve yourself w/forgiveness. You are not the world's worst Mom..~peggy~ wollmuth
