I've started "Hooked on Phonics" with Lincoln. He has pretty well blazed through the Pre-K workbooks since it just covers the upper and lower case letters and their sounds, which he already knows. There is one concept that has come a little slower. Rhyming. I have had no idea where to begin to teach someone how to read, so it's nice to have this guide. Anyway, I've been stressing rhymes with him, and when we read a book that rhymes, I try to get him to pick them out and think of other words that rhyme as well. It was a slow start, but I think he is catching on as evidenced by a discussion with him last night.
Matt was getting his running shoes on and Lincoln asked him why he had to exercise, cause Lincoln was wanting to play instead. Matt said, "Dad has to exercise cause he's getting fat". Then Lincoln's eyes brightened up and he said excitedly, "Fat and Matt... that's a rhyme!!!". Matt and I burst out laughing. It sure is!
