Yangdong Village

Matt had some time off over Lunar New Year so we went to Yangdong Folk Village. It's a very old village where they still live in homes with thatched roofs that are made with clay and cobble stones. Apparently this village was where a bunch of scholars moved during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897 AD). They designed the layout of the village using geomantic (Korean Feng Shui) principles. The thatched roof homes are where the commoners lived and the non-thatched homes are where the scholars lived. They had many Confucian Academies there. Many of the people that we saw there seemed to be quite old. What made us laugh was that they claim that all these homes are original structures (which they probably are), but most were equipped with dishes for cable/internet. Come on... we're in the 2000's ya know?

This is what the beautiful rice fields look like in the winter. Not so beautiful. Notice the dish on the house in the background.
